D. MC DONALD & CO.: Hudson-Mohawk Genealogical and Family Memoirs, by Cuyler Reynolds, Vol II, pg 511, SISSON Family. "About 1859,(the obit. of son, Wm McD. states the meter company started in 1854) Donald MacDonald (sic), a scotchman and a friend of Noel E. Sisso, after returning from a trip abroad, came to him and solicited the loan of a thousand dollars which he wished to invest in a plant for making gas meters. MacDonald's brother was engaged in that business in the old country and had convinced him that it was one that could be conducted profitably in Albany. The loan was made, Mr. Sisson having confidence in his friend, and being always willing to lend the hand of assistance. Later another loan was applied for and granted; Mac Donald had his plant in operation in a small way but needed capital. He finally offered Mr. Sisson a half interest in exchange for sufficient money to meet the demands of his growing business. The arrangement was made, and the firm of D. Mac Donal & Co. was formed in 1859, and still continues. (1911) The elder Mac Donald died and his place in the firm was taken by his son. The little plant of 1859 grew to a stately building running through from Lancaster to Chestnut street, and in 1897 was giving employment to two hundred men....2. Frank N. (Sisson, son of Noel Sisson) was associated with D. Mac Donald & Co., as salesman and representative at Columbus, Ohio;)
Editor: Donald Mc Donald had two brothers in Scotland, William, of whom nothing is known, and Hugh. Donald and Hugh started a gas meter plant in Albany in 1855 but the first venture was unsuccessful and Hugh returned to Scotland. In 1911, Donald's son William built a plant at 991 Broadway. (See 1911 Albany City Directory). The name was later changed to the American Meter Co., and the business discontinued when it was sold to Consolidated Edison Co. The building still remains and is the site of the famous RCA dog, Nipper.
