| 250 | Abram Statts came to America from Amsterdam on the "Houttuyn" in 1642. He was the first presiding officer of the village council of Beverwyck. In 1664 his house at Claverack was burned by the Indians, and his wife and others of his family were killed. He was the first regular physician to settle in what is now Albany, at a time when it was a remote village of about 100 people. It is said that he became the owner of Fort Orange, and the land on which it stood came down to his descendants. He had a license as a fur trader, and in 1647 he sent a shipment of 4200 beaver skins to New Amsterdam. For many years he was captain of the ship "Claverack", which traveled between Albany and New York.
